| I
have given myself the goal of riding the best motorcycle roads in all 50
states, and I plan on riding to 49 of them, Hawaii is beyond the
current range of my motorcycle so I'll leave it to the end.
I've
done Deal's
gap which is said by many to be the best motorcycle road in
America. I found out after I rode it that about the
same number of people think that it's overrated. The people that tell
me it's overrated won't tell me what the best road is, since
they want to keep it a secret. I also suffer people telling
me that roads like U.S. Route 1 is a great ride because it hops from
island to island in the Florida Keys via dozens of bridges.
It sounds like a great road for a convertible but to be a
great motorcycle road it has to be twisty. The best road in Texas is the "Twisted Sisters"; Highway 56 and Ranch Road 336. The best of the pair is Ranch Road 336. I was a little concerned when I turned on to it and had to stop and wait for the cattle to cross, especially since they left some fresh cow pies in the road which I was thinking might mess up my traction if I hit one in a lean. The entire route is inundated with butterflies so I have to stop and wash them off; the windshield, headlight, my face shield, and some times the camera. ![]() Texas' "Twisted" take on Stonehenge (Stonehenge II near Fredericksburg TX) ![]() Stonehenge Near Salisbury, England Twisted Sisters Ranch road 56 and Ranch Road 336 View Larger Map The best motorcycle road in Texas. It is a very nice road but even I'm sure it's not the best road in Arkansas. It's just the best road I could ride to on a weekend with Cheryl on the back of the bike on a cold October weekend. It was very pretty and twisty enough to qualify as a pretty good road. We road from Fort Worth to Hope, Arkansas, the birth place of Bill Clinton. We stopped for lunch in a very small café where the owner proceeds to tell my wife a story about a friend of her's that doesn't ride anymore because his wife was killed when he hit a deer riding with her on the back. I'm normally a pretty good tipper but I was a little "light" on her tip. We spent the rest of the trip riding North up Arkansas 7. Cheryl was squeezing my flanks, like she was riding a horse, whenever she thought she saw a; deer, raccoon, possum, dog, large mouse, a car that was going too slow, or just about anything that I might run up on too quickly. We got to Russellville, Arkansas as it was just starting to get dark. I typed "Hotels" into the bikes GPS and found three of them clustered together so we headed that way and checked into the Budget Inn. It was a dive, but that's what I expected. I didn't expect that they would have stolen the soap from the Holiday Inn Express. I'm not sure how it got there, maybe the guest before us thought is was funny but it was a little strange to see soap from a different hotel in the room. We got up early the next day, wiped the dew off the bike and were off before the sun had risen high enough to burn off any of the fog. We headed back mostly via Oklahoma which was a mistake since Oklahoma looks a lot like Texas and neither is as pretty as Arkansas. Cheryl was more than happy to pull into our driveway after sitting on the back of the bike for a little over 870 miles. I was a little tired myself. I know I'll have to do Arkansas over again because I'm sure AR 7 is not the best road in the state, then again it wasn't bad. |
