The foil is shaped to move through the water displacing some water downwards creating force on the foils. This force lifts the boat out of the water decreasing drag and increasing speed. The lift eventually balances when the hydrofoil can no longer lift anymore of the boats weight out of the water and reaches an equilibrium.
